ALTER-Net and TEEB

TEEB interim report coverTEEB - The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity - is a major study of the economic consequences of global biodiversity loss, proposed by the German government and endorsed by G8+5 leaders in 2007. The study will evaluate the costs of the loss of biodiversity and the associated decline in ecosystem services worldwide, and compare them with the costs of effective conservation and sustainable use. It is intended that it will sharpen awareness of the value of biodiversity and ecosystem services and facilitate the development of cost-effective policy responses, notably by preparing a 'valuation toolkit'.

TEEB will be a highly influential report affecting biodiversity research and policy priorities over the next few years. When it is presented to the CBD 10th Conference of the Parties in Japan in 2010 it is expected to have a similar impact to the 'Stern report' on Climate Change.

It is very important that ALTER-Net makes a contribution to this report. Therefore, ALTER-Net is engaging in the TEEB process. ALTER-Net is fortunate in having several people who are closely involved in the TEEB process and we can use their knowledge of the process to help target our inputs. ALTER-Net has much existing knowledge that can inform TEEB, and ALTER-Net partners can work jointly to bring this together in a form that can be used in the report.
