Association for Science and Discovery Centres

The Association for Science and Discovery Centres (formerly Ecsite-uk) represents over 50 science centres in the UK and a similar number of discovery centres in museums, botanic gardens, aquariums and zoos. It was set up in April 2001 to give the expanding sector a strong national voice and to be the point of reference for the work of science and discovery centres.

BBC Breathing Places programme

Breathing Places was set up in 2005 to encourage people to do one thing to help nature on their doorstep. Since then the project has grown, and the BBC is working with a wide range of partner organisations. The website lists lots of ideas, activities, events and case studies for people of all ages. It is also a good source of inspiration for anyone wanting to run their own nature awareness activity.

Connecting Science

Connecting Science is a social network for scientists and science students who want to inspire non-specialists about their work. It was initiated in the UK, but is open to anyone. Connecting Science offers'like-minded people who can offer moral support and exchange ideas and experiences of all kinds of outreach. It’s a place to find resources and information about funding, outreach opportunities and training. There are regular updates on science communication news, the chance to debate and ask questions and tell people about your events.'

The Frank Burnet Consultancy

Prof. Frank Burnet has worked as an actor and as a biochemist. In 2002 he became the first Professor of Science Communication in the UK and led the Science Communication Unit (formerly Graphic Science) at the University of the West of England, Bristol from its foundation in 1997 until December 2008 when he launched the Frank Burnet Cosultancy. In partnership with Ecsite, he provided science communication training . His website offers guidance documents (for a small fee) and details of the science communication masterclasses on offer.

Science Media Centre

The Science Media Centre is an independent venture working to promote the voices, stories and views of the scientific community to the national news media when science is in the headlines. It is first and foremost a press office for science. The SMC also provides other services, such as advice guides for scientists talking to the media. Sciencewise Expert Resource Centre

The Sciencewise Expert Resource Centre for Public Dialogue In Science and Innovation (ERC) is funded by the Department for Innovation, Universities & Skills (DIUS). It aims to help policy makers commission and use public dialogue to inform policy decisions in emerging areas of science and technology. It consists of a comprehensive online resource of information, advice and guidance together with a wide range of support services aimed at policy makers and all the different stakeholders involved in science and technology policy making, including the public.

Sense about Science

An independent charitable trust, which responds to the misrepresentation of science and scientific evidence on issues that matter to society, (e.g. scares about fluoride and the MMR vaccine, and controversies about genetic modification, stem cell research and radiation). Sense about Science works with scientists and civic groups to promote evidence and scientific reasoning in public discussion. STEMNET: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network - Ambassadors programme

STEMNET strives to encourage young people to have a positive attitude towards science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the hope that they will recognise the importance of STEM to their everyday lives and continue either to study a STEM subject post-16 and/or consider a STEM-related career. The STEM Ambassadors programme is STEMNET’s flagship programme.  It relies on the 20,000+ volunteers who offer their time and support to promote STEM subjects to young learners. Training, support and advice is offered to scientists wishing to be STEM Ambassadors.
