Dialogue Academy: Free science communication training for UK-based staff
Release date: 21 Aug 2009

This is an announcement of a series of training courses for UK-based staff.

‘Dialogue Academy: Professional Development for Science Communicators’ is a training program funded by the Wellcome Trust, led by At-Bristol, and developed in partnership with the UK Association for Science and Discovery Centres (ASDC) and four other science centres: Centre for Life, Glasgow Science Centre, The Living Rainforest and Thinktank.

‘Dialogue Academy’ is all about showcasing and sharing the latest dialogue techniques and activities, with a view to embedding more dialogue opportunities in the day-to-day practice of science and discovery centres, science museums, festivals and related organisations. The course will cover:

  • Why engage audience with dialogue
  • Dialogue formats
  • Facilitator skills
  • Indicators of dialogue
  • Fund-raising for dialogue

The academy will be run in two parts:

Part one: two days in residence exploring the practical skills and techniques for dialogue, as well as sharing developed resources and new ideas.

Between parts one and two will be an eight-week period for your staff to develop and deliver a dialogue activity in your centre.

Part two:  participants will come back together to reflect on their activity; to consider how to disseminate what they have learned to their colleagues; to explore funding opportunities and discover how to embed
dialogue into everyday practice at no-cost.

Four academies are being held across the UK, with the first at At-Bristol towards the end of September 2009. For each applicant, we do ask that a manager 'sponsor' them, guaranteeing that they will undertake the dialogue activity between part one and two of the academy.

The dates and locations for the four academies are as follows:

  1. Explore-At-Bristol : Wednesday and Thursday 23, 24 September and Wednesday 25 November 2009
  2. Thinktank, Birmingham : 11-12 January and 26 March 2010
  3. Glasgow Science Centre : 27-28 January and 30 March 2010
  4. Centre for Life, Newcastle : 20-21 April and 14 June 2010
