Institute of Social Ecology

SEC

The Institute of Social Ecology (Vienna, Austria) focuses on interactions between social and natural systems, viewing them as structurally coupled, investigating changes triggered by their co-evolution. We seek to employ an interdisciplinary conceptual language and methodological tools from both social and natural science knowledge traditions.  Some of the key concepts we work with are: social metabolism, land use, environmental information and indicator systems and sustainable development.

The Institute of Social Ecology (SEC) belongs to the Alpen-Adria University and is part of the Vienna node of the Faculty for Interdisciplinary Studies (IFF). It offers regular courses to students from various universities. It provides its own master and doctoral program in social and human ecology.
