The National Forest Service is a technical police Corps founded in 1822 as the main Italian authority for forests management and protection. It's roles include environmental conservation, pollution threats, illegal hunting, forest fire prevention, training and research. Since 1985, the CONECOFOR Office has been the National focal point of the ICP Forests Programme, whose National branch is called CONECOFOR Network. CONECOFOR Office also runs the National Forest Inventory. The Office has thus delivered, for more than 15 years, uninterrupted monitoring and inventory data on forest health. Between 2005 and 2009, CONECOFOR was the Italian partner within ALTER-Net and, in the frame of this Project, could lead the involvement of several Italian sites in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems into the European Long Term Ecological Research Network (LTER-Europe) in 2006, cooperating with several research Institutes of excellence to start the Italian LTER Network. CONECOFOR Office is today involved in ALTER-Net, as well as in LTER Italy, LTER Europe and EnvEurope (LIFE+ co-financed project, “Environmental Quality and Pressure assessment across Europe: the LTER Network as an integrated and shared system for ecosystem monitoring” , 2010-2013).

ECNC is an independent European expertise centre for biodiversity and sustainable development, working in over 60 European and Central Asian countries, and supporting various global processes. ECNC’s mission is to promote the conservation and sustainable use of Europe’s nature and biodiversity, because of their intrinsic values and their relevance to our economy and culture.

ECNC provides a bridge between policy and science and society on the one hand, and ecology and economy on the other, allowing us to strongly contribute to greener and more resource efficient economies.

We work intensively with intergovernmental and supranational organizations and processes, in particular the European Union, its Commission and all its 27 Member States, as well as with the European Environment Agency, the Council of Europe and the European office of the United Nations Environment Programme. We have strong working relationships with many other organizations, such as IUCN and REC-Regional Environmental Center.

ECNC has run or contributed to over 220 projects since its establishment in 1993, in nearly every corner of Europe and in various cases spanning the entire continent. ECNC has a regional office for Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia, based in Zagreb, Croatia, with active support from the Croatian Ministry of Culture.

ECNC coordinates or is part of a number of other important European networks, such as the European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity, the EU Coordination Group on Biodiversity and Nature, the European Forum for Nature Conservation and Pastoralism, the European Habitats Forum, the Wild Europe Initiative and the European Bison Conservation Centre (EBCC).

The European Regional Centre for Ecohydrology (ERCE) is an international institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences (emerged from International Centre for Ecology in 2008), and the category II UNESCO centre.

The aim of the Centre is to develop the international and national research activities focused on interactions between hydrological, biogeochemical and biological processes at the catchment scale from the point of view of the optimal management, protection and restoration of water resources. A special emphasis is put on the use of ecosystem properties as a tool for environmental management and restoration (ecohydrological approach). The scientific profile of the Centre is focused on further development of ecohydrological science and its implementation for restoring freshwater resources in the framework of the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme. Priority is being given to delivering tools for implementing the European Water Framework Directive as part of Poland's national cooperation. Another research activities include: hydrobiology, river ecology, fish ecology, environmental chemistry, landscape processes, socio-ecological systems, soil ecology, bioindication, phytotechnology (including remediation) and ecotoxicology.

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ was established in 1991 and has more than 1,100 employees in Leipzig, Halle/S. and Magdeburg. They study the complex interactions between humans and the environment in cultivated and damaged landscapes. The scientists develop concepts and processes to help secure the natural foundations of human life for future generations.

The UFZ´s Research Structure

Research at the UFZ is organized into 34 methodical competence centres, the so-called departments. The large number of departments underlines the large range of competences and approaches at the UFZ. The departments are organized into seven divisions, namely:

Environmental Systems, Computation and Monitoring

Water and Soil Sciences

Terrestrial Ecology

Environmental Technology

Environmental Health

Health Research

Social Sciences

In terms of its fields of research the UFZ focuses on three core subject areas (Land use options; Biodiversity; Bioenergy) as well as three cross-sectional competence areas. These are assigned to the Helmholtz Research Fields of Earth and Environment (Research programme "Terrestrial Environment" / accounting for 85 percent of UFZ resources), Health (Research Programme "Environmental Health" / 8 percent) as well as Energy (Research Programmes "Renewable Energies" and "Technology, Innovation and Society" / 7 percent).

Biodiversity

Biodiversity is imperative for us. It provides healthy and functioning ecosystems and ecosystem services.

Humans have always benefited from the use of biodiversity. No other species on earth has impacted nature to such an extent by shaping and changing landscapes. In doing so mankind has altered and partially irreversibly destroyed biodiversity and ecosystem functions. Although the appreciation of biodiversity appears to have increased on many levels, the rate of implementing appropriate mitigation is still too slow. As a result the European target of stopping the loss of biodiversity by 2010 has clearly been missed. The question now is what kind of world with how much biodiversity we want to have and need in the future.

More than 100 scientists from different disciplines of the natural and social sciences work at the UFZ in search of answers to this question. In doing so we investigate fundamental relationships for example on the impacts of land consumption, fragmented landscapes, invasive species or climate change on plant and animal populations and the functions of ecosystems.

We are trying to find out whether a higher genetic diversity and greater species diversity really ensure that ecosystems are more stable and able to buffer changes.

We regard biodiversity also from an economics point of view, calculate the costs and benefits of making certain decisions and provide systematic knowledge for a sustainable use of the scarce good of biodiversity (TEEB – The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity, www.teebweb.org). Questions about the risks and opportunities of bioenergy are closely related, as renewable sources of energy are currently dramatically affecting agriculture and forestry, water management, the energy supply and societies. Simulation models help to investigate different development perspectives in the form of scenarios to help make informed decisions about a sustainable bioenergy strategy.

The Institute of Landscape Ecology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences is an interdisciplinary scientific institution for basic and applied research in landscape ecology. It is the continuer of the Institute of Landscape Biology of SAS which as the firsts one in the former Czechoslovakia started to deal with the problems of landscape ecology in the period when this discipline was not established. At present the main research tasks of the institute are:

analyses, syntheses and interpretations of abiotic, biotic and socio-economic landscape elements for landscape-ecological planning

ecological landscape problems, influence of anthropogenous factors on landscape, ecological optimalization and landscape utilization and methodology of ecological carrying capacity

ecological problems of agricultural landscape, territorial system of ecological stability, preservation of biodiversity and geoecodiversity

territorial system of stress factors, structure of the present landscape structure created by Man

biodiversity and production ecology of forest ecosystems, mainly in stress conditions caused by pollution, climatic changes and tourism

management of protected areas endangered by negative interferences.

The methodology of landscape-ecological planning LANDEP, which is included also in the Agenda 21 from the Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 as the suggested methodology for integrated approach to management of natural resources (Chapter 10 in Agenda 21), was elaborated at the Institute of Landscape Ecology.

The Institute is the publisher of two journals:

Ekológia (Bratislava) is a scientific journal published in English and followed in Current Contents - Agriculture, Biology and Environmental Sciences. Its impact factor (value of quoting) has an increasing tendency

Životné prostredie is a revue published in Slovak with English abstracts.

The Institute of Landscape Ecology has an important place within the frame of international cooperation. It takes part in many international projects in cooperation with Austria, Poland, Denmark, Hungary, Russia, Romania, Ukraine, Great Britain, Vietnam, Norway, USA within the framework of the projects of European Commission, UNESCO-MAB, UNCED, PHARE and 5th 6th 7th Framework Programme. It takes part in transboundary research projects, e.g. the areas along the rivers Danube, March and Ipeľ.

Since 1967 the Institute organizes international symposia on ecological landscape problems every three years. At the sixth symposium in Piešťany in 1982 the International Association of Landscape Ecology (IALE) and in 1992 from the initiative of the Institute also the Slovak Ecological Society (SEKOS) has been founded.

The Institute makes an effort also in educational process. Its scientists teach at universities, they are supervisors; they lead post-gradual courses, international summer courses. The Institute is the common workplace with the Constantine the Philosophus University in Nitra. The Institute currently has a staff of 24 scientists, 9 docstudents, 15 technicians (June 2011).
