ALTER-Net's continuing mission, 2009 and beyond

ALTER-Net's main objective is to continue to develop lasting integration amongst its partner institutes, and others, all of whom are involved in biodiversity research, monitoring and/or communication. ALTER-Net is building upon a number of activities developed during the first (EC-funded phase), including:

  • Identification of common research priorities and development of a common research programme

  • Further development of the LTER-Europe network of Long-Term Ecosystem Research sites (LTER) and Long-Term Socio-Ecological Research platforms (LTSER)

  • Development of a common training programme, a key component of which is the ALTER-Net Summer School, providing training in inter-disciplinary approaches to biodiversity and ecosystems research

  • Communication and knowledge transfer through initiatives such as the International Press Centre for Biodiversity Research, a partnership with Ecsite, the European network of science centres and museums, and ALTER-Net's Nature and Biodiversity News & Views website
