For the duration of the EC-funded ALTER-Net project, from 2004-2009, the objectives of the project were addressed by a series of linked Work Packages (WP). Six Work Packages dealt with the integration objectives, whilst a further six covered the joint programme of research. These Work Packages interacted and supported one another, so that the research WPs, in identifying gaps in knowledge, tools, etc., informed the integration WPs, which aimed to develop the necessary tools and frameworks for integration.
A further two WPs were specifically tasked with the 'spread of excellence'. One WP addressed communication and dissemination, and focussed on communication of biodiversity research to the wider community, including other researchers, the media and policymakers. The second dealt with training and mobility issues, so that the necessary skills base for biodiversity research and communication could be strengthened.
A small Network Coordination Unit managed ALTER-Net, and was supported by the Network Management Group of WP leaders, and the Network Council, consisting of representatives from each partner organisation. See Organisational structure for more information about how ALTER-Net operates.
ALTER-Net's over-arching goals
From 2004-2009, ALTER-Net had four (originally six) over-arching goals, designed to help focus the activities of the Work Packages on key areas where long-lasting integration is necessary. These goals are now translated into a new programme of work for 2009 and beyond.
