LTER-Europe
LTER-Europe is an initiative to develop a network of research and monitoring sites suitable for long-term studies of changes to ecosystems. It involves a wider group of partners than ALTER-Net. However, the development of such a network is a key aspect of ALTER-Net's work. LTER-Europe was formally established on 15 June 2007 at a meeting organised by ALTER-Net. ALTER-Net is developing the capacity for both conventional long-term ecological research and monitoring and socio-economic studies (through the development of network of Long-Term Socio-Ecological Research sites, or LTSER).

Interdisciplinary Research
Despite its ecological content, biodiversity cannot be protected without knowledge which elucidates the interlinkages of the society and ecosystems. This requires research, which is produced jointly by scholars of different disciplines and which includes other experts in the society into the research process. ALTER-Net has taken this interdisciplinary approach to long term biodiversity research.
