The EU post 2020 Biodiversity Strategy: What should it look like, how can ALTER-Net science contribute?

First ALTER-Net Horizon Scanning event

ALTER-Net wishes to significantly contribute to the development of the EU post 2020 Biodiversity Strategy. To maximize this input we will organize two events, a horizon scanning event among interested (ALTER-Net) experts in September 2018 and our biannual ALTER-Net conference in May 2019 (provisional period: 2-3 days in the week of 13 to 17 May 2019).

Horizon Scanning Event

At the Horizon Scanning Event, we wish to bring together and elaborate scientific thoughts on what the future European Biodiversity Strategy should look like. This event is being organized in cooperation with EKLIPSE. Together with the EKLIPSE, we will consider how the research of ALTER-Net scientists and the EKLIPSE network could contribute to its implementation.

The horizon scanning event is open to staff of ALTER-Net partner organizations and associates of the EKLIPSE network. Invitations have been sent to ALTER-Net Council members who are asked to distribute the invitation within their institute.

Place and Dates: Peyresq (France, Haute Provence) 2-5th of September 2018

This event will be organized back to back with our Summer School (end of August 2018) in Peyresq in the Haute Provence in France. Accommodation for ALTER-Net members will be organized by ALTER-Net; traveling costs should be dealt with by your home institute. Accommodations for non-ALTER-Net members will be managed by EKLIPSE.

Experts who are concerned about biodiversity beyond 2020, want to contribute to instruments that serve biodiversity conservation and maintenance of its evolutionary potential, and influence future research in Europe are encouraged to apply to participate in this event. It is organized at a heavenly and stimulating place in splendid isolation; the serene surroundings of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence will allow you, together with your fellow experts, to think about and have profound discussions on the issue of biodiversity--and to contribute to an instrument that can be expected to ensure its maintenance and its chances to develop naturally and spontaneously.

Participants: Experts in relevant fields; including scientists, policy personnel, and business persons.

Goal: The prime deliverable of this meeting is both a publishable opinion paper and a policy brief that stimulate both the research community and the EC towards a robust EU post-2020 Biodiversity Strategy.

Places are limited and the closing date for indicating your wish to participate is 6 July 2018. Please see the information provided via your ALTER-Net Council representative and respond to the contact point.

ALTER-Net conference

Together with the colleagues of DG-Environment, we will subsequently organise our biennial conference on this issue. The conference will be held after the next plenary IPBES meeting in Paris at which the Global Assessment will be finalised. It will deal with the post 2020 Strategy and the way to implement the IPBES outcomes in it. It is expected to take place at our classical venue, the Augustinian Monastery in Ghent (Belgium).
