ALTER-Net Horizon Scanning: EU Biodiversity Strategy post-2020

From 2-5 September, 2018, ALTER-Net hosted its first Horizon Scanning event in cooperation with EKLIPSE. Set in Peyresq, France amidst the backdrop of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, this meeting provided a singular opportunity to consider the post-2020 future of the EU Biodiversity Strategy.

With significant contribution to the direction of the EU Biodiversity Strategy as the primary Horizon Scanning goal, attending experts from ALTER-Net and EKLIPSE set out to produce a publishable opinion paper and policy brief as the major event output. With these deliverables, ALTER-Net and EKLIPSE aim to stimulate both the European Commission and the research community toward a robust and effective post-2020 EU Biodiversity Strategy.

Now that the Horizon Scanning meeting has concluded, discussions are being transformed into action.

Horizon Scanning Actions

The meeting in Peyresq gave ALTER-Net and EKLIPSE the opportunity to determine the best way to organize activities relevant to the post-2020 Biodiversity Strategy. These actions and activities will include the following:

  • Maintaining close contact with the European Commission to keep relevant DGs, members of parliament, and other key figures engaged and informed.
  • Pursuing parallel activities that coincide with the Horizon Scanning initiative.
  • Pursuing a broad spectrum of Europe-oriented organizations for joint participation.
  • Distributing a call to individuals and organizations for participating in the post-2020 science contribution process.
  • Contacting relevant organizations to motivate participation
  • Producing a paper on thematic input.
  • Bringing together an organizational committee.
  • Organizing an e-conference on the theme of the EU post-2020 Biodiversity Strategy.
  • Public engagement actions.
  • The ALTER-Net and Friends conference in Ghent (15-19 June, Ghent).
  • Further actions in development.

All of these actions lead toward the ultimate goal of major science contribution to the EU post-2020 Biodiversity Strategy.
