The Finnish Environmental Institute (SYKE) is looking for a person for the post of SENIOR RESEARCHER - Climate change policy and socio-technical systems

Term: Starting from spring 2012 and ending 31st December 2016
Location: Helsinki, Finland, or other SYKE offices in Joensuu, Jyväskylä or Oulu

SYKE (http://www.environment.fi) is the leading environmental research and development institute in Finland. SYKE produces information and comprehensive evaluations on environmental issues to support political decision making. SYKE's research is carried out in five topical centers on themes varying from global environmental issues, like climate change and biodiversity, to more national and regional issues such as eutrophication of the Baltic Sea and waste management. Expertise on governance and societal systems is located in the Environmental Policy Centre. There is a strong emphasis on providing support to the decision-making process, including scientific and technical advice, and through the development of methods to combat harmful environmental change. SYKE employs nearly 600 people, (370 university educated scientists) and participates in a large number of international research projects.

The specific task of the post is to (a) explore the societal preconditions for effective climate policy in relation to socio-technical systems such as traffic and energy systems; and (b) consider the influences of public policies on these systems. The research should aim to increase understanding of societal structures and processes that relate to climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Requirements: The position requires a PhD in a relevant subject and several years’ experience of preparing and leading national and international research projects, plus a proven ability to analyse the impacts of public policies on private sector companies or on societal factors that affect changes in socio-technical systems such as transport and energy.

Furthermore, experience in academic publishing, fluent written and spoken English and team working skills are required. Experience in evaluation of the impacts of public policies, working in multi-disciplinary environment, interaction with decision-makers and an ability to speak Finnish are advantages.

Salary: 4027-5042 €/month, agreed on the basis of experience and skills.

When assessing the applications SYKE will consider in particular the quality of research, its policy relevance and the applicant´s networks. Since SYKE is hoping to gain insights into processes and procedures in other cultures, working experiences from universities and research institutions outside Finland is considered a special merit.
