The British Ecological Society is hosting a unique two-day event aimed at supporting early career ecologists and conservation biologists in gaining a funded PhD studentship as well as more broadly considering potential careers and opportunities within ecology, evolution and conservation available after conducting a PhD.
The aim is to provide a forum for an exchange of ideas about whether a PhD is the right career move, and if so, how best to apply for one. There is also an opportunity for participants to practice and get feedback on some of the skills necessary for success in a career in ecology, including presenting UG or masters projects at the first BES student ecology symposium.
28 November
- Which PhD?
For those students who have yet to decide on a PhD, this programme highlights when, where and how to find a PhD along with advice on CVs, interview techniques and the role of social media in building an online profile.
- Unlocking your potential
On the evening of the first day there will be a drink reception and informal networking event, followed by a panel discussion featuring some distinguished ecologists and conservation biologists from a range of career paths talking about how to use a PhD as a platform to launch your career.
29 November
- Mastering ecology symposium
We aim to provide a opportunity for students to develop and practise their skills in attending, preparing and presenting at scientific symposia, giving you the chance to showcase your undergraduate or master’s research. We will also offer feedback to all students who participate in the symposium. If you have never presented at a scientific conference before this day will be a friendly first opportunity to gain that experience.
